What Is Lymphedema?
Lymph is the fluid that flows through the lymphatic system, a network composed of lymph vessels and intervening lymph nodes whose function is to return fluid from the tissues to the central circulation. A build-up of lymphatic fluid under the skin is called Lymphedema. Early and careful management, along with Lymphatic Massage and therapy is needed to prevent and reduce symptoms.
Why do I need a Lymphatic Massage?
Some medical and cosmetic procedures can cause trauma to the surrounding tissues and lymphatic vessels, preventing normal lymphatic flow causing swelling (lymphedema). Prolonged lymphedema can cause inflammation, pain and fibrosis which results in the formation of excess dense, fibrous connective tissue.
How does a Lymphatic Massage work?
When performed correctly, a Lymphatic Massage helps prevent and manage post-op lymphedema or fibrosis (scar tissue) from cosmetic or medical procedures. It accelerates recovery and healing, stimulating lymphatic vessels and nodes through gentle hand techniques applied to the skin to encourage movement of lymph.
Lymphatic Massages are most effective when combined with exercise, dietary restrictions, skin care and compression garments .
